BIJLI, A SHORT STORY BY DR. SHAILESH GUPTA VEER
"This
is a wonderful coffee house! Is it yours?" Vikram asked the owner, staring
for two minutes while sipping his coffee. "You're Bijli from the red-light
area, aren't you?"
The
owner seemed unfazed by the question. "You've been to the red-light area,
so you must know me." Vikram, who had come to the coffee house with his
wife Sanyogita, didn't expect such a candid response.
"Okay,
it's alright," Vikram tried to brush off the topic, but Sanyogita
intervened. "Don't hide your flaws, Vikram. Tell me, how do you know
her?"
Bijli
stepped in, "Ma'am, I'll tell you. Vikram Babu, you once told me about
your journey from the betel business to the diamond trade. I too changed my
profession. Instead of selling my body, I started selling coffee. Did I do
something wrong?"
Bijli's
face radiated self-respect. Vikram paid the bill, his head bowed in a mix of
shame and admiration, and walked out of the coffee house with Sanyogita.
